How to Write Poetry
Poetry writing requires a good knowledge of the basic structure of a poem. Many people believe that writing a poem is just a haphazard placing of words. This is far from the truth. As one gets into the study of poetry, they realize just how much thought and work needs to into the creation of a truly memorable poem.
Writing a poem is usually preceded by an inspirational thought or feeling on the writer’s part. Poetry is an art form in writing. Instead of actual pictures, the author works to create vivid images in the reader’s mind. By using interesting descriptive words and also putting them together in such a manner that the whole piece appears to flow, is an art form. A poem that uses ordinary words or simply describes a situation is probably going to be a very boring piece. One needs to take the inspiration that led them to writing a poem and truly dig way down beneath the surface in order to lead the reader to the same point where you were inspired.
There are various styles of poetry and all of them have rules on how they need to be structured, even free verse poetry. They either have to have a certain number of words or lines or they need to have certain rhymes. Others depend on certain number of syllables to control the tempo of a poem. Words are used to control the speed of how one reads the poem. This method of controlling the poem is called “tightening”. Tightening a poem is what makes a memorable piece of work.
Mood and tone of a poem is very important, as you don’t want to be swinging back and forth between a somber mood to a joyful one. This is too confusing and will lose your reader. The topic doesn’t necessarily indicate the mood as one can write about any topic in any mood. Just keep it consistent throughout.
Elicit feedback from readers; they’ll be your strongest indicator of how your writing is coming across.
Study the art of poetry for the more you read poems and study the different styles the more you will realize just what makes a great poem. Remember to use imagery and strong language to convey an emotion to the readers. A poem is not a story so avoid using story like writing. The truly successful poems utilize a strong voice in their writing. This is something you will discover for yourself the more you study this craft.
